Abstract

The dominance of modern commercial food has triggered a phenomenon of cultural amnesia among the youth of Palembang regarding historical assimilated culinary heritage, such as Ragit. This urgency is corroborated by a preliminary survey, which demonstrated that 73.6% of 57 youth community volunteers were entirely unaware of the culinary's existence. This community service article aims to dismantle this hegemony and restore collective historical memory through an experiential learning approach. The program was implemented at the Oeng Boen Tjit Historical House in collaboration with 27 youths from the Sahabat Cagar Budaya community. Through four cycles of collaborative cooking practices, this intervention not only transferred cosmopolitan historical narratives but also dismantled psychological barriers associated with the perceived complexity of preparing traditional cuisine. Interactive qualitative evaluation results indicate the achievement of two primary indicators: cognitive transformation regarding the urgency of preserving intangible cultural heritage, and the cultivation of participants' self-efficacy in recognizing the high accessibility of local raw materials. This physical and multi-sensory interaction effectively repositioned the youth from passive consumers to active cultural agents. As a sustainability outcome, the acquired skills open avenues for commodification through micro-creative economy schemes and the amplification of cultural resonance in the public sphere via digital media. In conclusion, cultural preservation necessitates a participatory approach that integrates past collective memory with contemporary living spaces to ensure the continued relevance of local traditions amidst rapid modernization.
