Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in utilizing rice straw through pyrolysis technology to produce biochar and liquid smoke. The program involved 22 members of the Sipakario Farmer Group in Pasiang Village, Matakali District, Polewali Mandar Regency. Activities included socialization, demonstrations, hands-on training, pre-test and post-test evaluation, and three-month monitoring. The modified pyrolysis unit processed 100 kg of rice straw per batch at 400–500 °C for 6–7 hours using firewood. The evaluation, using a one-group pre-test/post-test design without a comparison group, showed an increase in average knowledge scores from 26.14% to 91.86%. During monitoring, the unit was operated eight times, processing approximately 800 kg of rice straw and producing an estimated 240–280 kg of biochar and 120–200 L of liquid smoke. All group members were able to operate the unit independently. The products were used for vegetable and flower cultivation and introduced for trial sales to the local community. The main constraints were limited firewood use during the rainy season and the absence of production cost records. These results indicate that simple pyrolysis technology offers an alternative for rice straw utilization and sustainable biomass management. However, economic and environmental impacts were not quantitatively measured and remain preliminary indications.
